The protein encoded by this gene is a DNA-binding homeobox protein and a transcriptional repressor, which appears to repress transcription by recruiting histone deacetylases to TGF beta-responsive genes. This gene is amplified and over-expressed in some ovarian cancers. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. A related pseudogene has been identified on chromosome 1. Read-through transcription also exists between this gene and the neighboring downstream C20orf24 (chromosome 20 open reading frame 24) gene. [provided by RefSeq, Dec 2010]
GeneCards Summary for TGIF2 Gene
TGIF2 (TGFB Induced Factor Homeobox 2) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with TGIF2 include Holoprosencephaly and Holoprosencephaly 4. Among its related pathways are Transcriptional activity of SMAD2/SMAD3-SMAD4 heterotrimer and TGF-beta signaling pathway (KEGG). Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include DNA-binding transcription factor activity. An important paralog of this gene is TGIF1.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for TGIF2 Gene
Transcriptional repressor, which probably repress transcription by binding directly the 5'-CTGTCAA-3' DNA sequence or by interacting with TGF-beta activated SMAD proteins. Probably represses transcription via the recruitment of histone deacetylase proteins.
