Previous GeneCards Identifiers for SDS Gene
This gene encodes one of three enzymes that are involved in metabolizing serine and glycine. L-serine dehydratase converts L-serine to pyruvate and ammonia and requires pyridoxal phosphate as a cofactor. The encoded protein can also metabolize threonine to NH4+ and 2-ketobutyrate. The encoded protein is found predominantly in the liver. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
GeneCards Summary for SDS Gene
SDS (Serine Dehydratase) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with SDS include Deafness, Autosomal Dominant 69 and Breast Abscess. Among its related pathways are threonine degradation and Metabolism. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include protein homodimerization activity and L-serine ammonia-lyase activity. An important paralog of this gene is SDSL.
