This gene likely encodes a member of the arginine/serine-rich splicing factor family. A similar protein in Rat appears to bind the large subunit of RNA polymerase II and provide a link between transcription and pre-mRNA splicing. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2009]
GeneCards Summary for SCAF4 Gene
SCAF4 (SR-Related CTD Associated Factor 4) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with SCAF4 include Ankyloblepharon-Ectodermal Defects-Cleft Lip/Palate and Wells Syndrome. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include nucleic acid binding and nucleotide binding. An important paralog of this gene is SCAF8.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for SCAF4 Gene
Anti-terminator protein required to prevent early mRNA termination during transcription (PubMed:31104839). Together with SCAF8, acts by suppressing the use of early, alternative poly(A) sites, thereby preventing the accumulation of non-functional truncated proteins (PubMed:31104839). Mechanistically, associates with the phosphorylated C-terminal heptapeptide repeat domain (CTD) of the largest RNA polymerase II subunit (POLR2A), and subsequently binds nascent RNA upstream of early polyadenylation sites to prevent premature mRNA transcript cleavage and polyadenylation (PubMed:31104839). Independently of SCAF8, also acts as a suppressor of transcriptional readthrough (PubMed:31104839).
