This gene encodes one of two non-identical subunits for ribonucleotide reductase. This reductase catalyzes the formation of deoxyribonucleotides from ribonucleotides. Synthesis of the encoded protein (M2) is regulated in a cell-cycle dependent fashion. Transcription from this gene can initiate from alternative promoters, which results in two isoforms that differ in the lengths of their N-termini. Related pseudogenes have been identified on chromosomes 1 and X. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
GeneCards Summary for RRM2 Gene
RRM2 (Ribonucleotide Reductase Regulatory Subunit M2) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with RRM2 include Diamond-Blackfan Anemia 20 and Choriocarcinoma. Among its related pathways are Nucleotide Metabolism and E2F mediated regulation of DNA replication. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include oxidoreductase activity and ribonucleoside-diphosphate reductase activity, thioredoxin disulfide as acceptor. An important paralog of this gene is RRM2B.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for RRM2 Gene
Provides the precursors necessary for DNA synthesis. Catalyzes the biosynthesis of deoxyribonucleotides from the corresponding ribonucleotides. Inhibits Wnt signaling.
