Previous GeneCards Identifiers for PMCH Gene
This gene encodes a preproprotein that is proteolytically processed to generate multiple protein products. These products include melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH), neuropeptide-glutamic acid-isoleucine (NEI), and neuropeptide-glycine-glutamic acid (NGE). Melanin-concentrating hormone is a 19-amino acid neuropeptide that stimulates hunger and may additionally regulate energy homeostasis, reproductive function, and sleep. Pseudogenes of this gene have been identified on chromosome 5. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2015]
GeneCards Summary for PMCH Gene
PMCH (Pro-Melanin Concentrating Hormone) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with PMCH include Byssinosis and Cardiomyopathy, Familial Hypertrophic, 20. Among its related pathways are Signaling by GPCR and Peptide ligand-binding receptors. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include melanin-concentrating hormone activity.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for PMCH Gene
MCH may act as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator in a broad array of neuronal functions directed toward the regulation of goal-directed behavior, such as food intake, and general arousal. May also have a role in spermatocyte differentiation.
