This gene encodes a member of the lysophospholipid acyltransferase family. The encoded protein catalyzes the reacylation of lysophosphatidylglycerol to phosphatidylglycerol, a membrane phospholipid that is an important precursor for the synthesis of cardiolipin. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Mar 2016]
GeneCards Summary for LPGAT1 Gene
LPGAT1 (Lysophosphatidylglycerol Acyltransferase 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with LPGAT1 include Progressive Familial Heart Block, Type Ii and Cardiomyopathy, Dilated, 1D. Among its related pathways are Metabolism and Glycerophospholipid biosynthesis. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include transferase activity, transferring acyl groups. An important paralog of this gene is LCLAT1.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for LPGAT1 Gene
Lysophosphatidylglycerol (LPG) specific acyltransferase that recognizes various acyl-CoAs and LPGs as substrates but demonstrates a clear preference for long chain saturated fatty acyl-CoAs and oleoyl-CoA as acyl donors. Prefers oleoyl-LPG over palmitoyl-LPG as an acyl receptor and oleoyl-CoA over lauroyl-CoA as an acyl donor.
