The protein encoded by this gene is an omega class glutathione S-transferase (GST) with glutathione-dependent thiol transferase and dehydroascorbate reductase activities. GSTs are involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics and carcinogens. The encoded protein acts as a homodimer and is found in the cytoplasm. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010]
GSTO1 (Glutathione S-Transferase Omega 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with GSTO1 include Barrett's Adenocarcinoma and Night Blindness, Congenital Stationary, Type 1A. Among its related pathways are Metabolism of water-soluble vitamins and cofactors and Drug metabolism - cytochrome P450. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include oxidoreductase activity and glutathione dehydrogenase (ascorbate) activity. An important paralog of this gene is GSTO2.
