This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the GNS1/SUR4 family. Members of this family play a role in elongation of long chain fatty acids to provide precursors for synthesis of sphingolipids and ceramides. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2013]
GeneCards Summary for ELOVL3 Gene
ELOVL3 (ELOVL Fatty Acid Elongase 3) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are alpha-linolenic (omega3) and linoleic (omega6) acid metabolism and Fatty Acyl-CoA Biosynthesis. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include transferase activity. An important paralog of this gene is ELOVL6.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for ELOVL3 Gene
Catalyzes the first and rate-limiting reaction of the four that constitute the long-chain fatty acids elongation cycle. This endoplasmic reticulum-bound enzymatic process, allows the addition of 2 carbons to the chain of long- and very long-chain fatty acids/VLCFAs per cycle. Condensing enzyme with higher activity toward C18 acyl-CoAs, especially C18:0 acyl-CoAs. May participate in the production of saturated and monounsaturated VLCFAs of different chain lengths that are involved in multiple biological processes as precursors of membrane lipids and lipid mediators.
