This gene encodes the heavy chain subunit of axonemal dynein, a large multi-subunit molecular motor. Axonemal dynein attaches to microtubules and hydrolyzes ATP to mediate the movement of cilia and flagella. The gene expresses at least two transcript variants; additional variants have been described, but their full length nature has not been determined. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
GeneCards Summary for DNAH9 Gene
DNAH9 (Dynein Axonemal Heavy Chain 9) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with DNAH9 include Ciliary Dyskinesia, Primary, 40 and Dextrocardia With Situs Inversus. Among its related pathways are Pathways of neurodegeneration - multiple diseases. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include ATPase activity and motor activity. An important paralog of this gene is DNAH17.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for DNAH9 Gene
Force generating protein required for cilia beating in respiratory epithelia (PubMed:30471717, PubMed:30471718). Produces force towards the minus ends of microtubules. Dynein has ATPase activity; the force-producing power stroke is thought to occur on release of ADP.
