This gene is a member of the cadherin superfamily whose members encode calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecules. The encoded protein has a signal peptide, 27 cadherin repeat domains and a unique cytoplasmic region. This particular cadherin family member is expressed in fibroblasts but not in melanocytes or keratinocytes. The cell-cell adhesion of fibroblasts is thought to be necessary for wound healing. GeneCards Summary for DCHS1 Gene
DCHS1 (Dachsous Cadherin-Related 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with DCHS1 include Van Maldergem Syndrome 1 and Mitral Valve Prolapse 2. Among its related pathways are G12-G13 in Cellular Signaling and Nanog in Mammalian ESC Pluripotency. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include calcium ion binding. An important paralog of this gene is DCHS2.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for DCHS1 Gene
Calcium-dependent cell-adhesion protein. Mediates functions in neuroprogenitor cell proliferation and differentiation. In the heart, has a critical role for proper morphogenesis of the mitral valve, acting in the regulation of cell migration involved in valve formation (PubMed:26258302).
