This gene encodes a type II classical cadherin from the cadherin superfamily, integral membrane proteins that mediate calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Mature cadherin proteins are composed of a large N-terminal extracellular domain, a single membrane-spanning domain, and a small, highly conserved C-terminal cytoplasmic domain. Type II (atypical) cadherins are defined based on their lack of a HAV cell adhesion recognition sequence specific to type I cadherins. Expression of this particular cadherin in osteoblastic cell lines, and its upregulation during differentiation, suggests a specific function in bone development and maintenance. GeneCards Summary for CDH11 Gene
CDH11 (Cadherin 11) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with CDH11 include Aneurysmal Bone Cysts and Deafness, Autosomal Recessive 89. Among its related pathways are ERK Signaling and CDK-mediated phosphorylation and removal of Cdc6. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include calcium ion binding. An important paralog of this gene is CDH8.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for CDH11 Gene
Cadherins are calcium-dependent cell adhesion proteins. They preferentially interact with themselves in a homophilic manner in connecting cells; cadherins may thus contribute to the sorting of heterogeneous cell types.
