GeneCards Summary for AREL1 Gene
AREL1 (Apoptosis Resistant E3 Ubiquitin Protein Ligase 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with AREL1 include Colorectal Cancer, Hereditary Nonpolyposis, Type 7 and Lynch Syndrome. Among its related pathways are Innate Immune System and Class I MHC mediated antigen processing and presentation. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include ligase activity and ubiquitin-protein transferase activity. An important paralog of this gene is HECW2.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot Summary for AREL1 Gene
E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase which accepts ubiquitin from an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme in the form of a thioester and then directly transfers the ubiquitin to targeted substrates. Inhibits apoptosis by ubiquitinating and targeting for degradation a number of proapoptotic proteins including DIABLO/SMAC, HTRA2 and SEPT4/ARTS which are released from the mitochondrion into the cytosol following apoptotic stimulation (PubMed:23479728). Modulates pulmonary inflammation by targeting SOCS2 for ubiquitination and subsequent degradation by the proteasome (PubMed:31578312).
