Getting Started

What is GeneCards?

GeneCards® is an integrated database of human genes that includes automatically-mined genomic, proteomic and transcriptomic information, as well as orthologies, disease relationships, SNPs, gene expression, gene function, and links for ordering assays and antibodies.

The search engine sorts this vast sea of information, and provides the user with only the relevant, yet very detailed, information.

Quick Start

Search

  1. Enter an expression into the search field on the GeneCards homepage and
click the Search button in order to begin the search.
Note: keywords search is the default search option.

Example of a keywords search: diabetes AND tongue

  2. The Search Result page displays a closed list of minicards, showing the gene symbol, description, category, GCID and a relevance score. To open the minicard click on the plus to the left of the gene symbol on the appropriate minicard. All fields of the GeneCard in which your search term(s) were found will be displayed. All of the keywords entered in your search, including any variants found due to stemming, will be highlighted in the minicards.

  3. Select the gene you wish to explore further, and click its gene symbol link (on the left side, in the 'Symbol' column).
The GeneCard appears with all data concerning this gene.

Sample Gene

Click the sample gene in the middle of the GeneCards homepage to see an example of one gene in GeneCards. Alternatively, explore the different sections in a GeneCard using the colored section buttons right next to the sample gene.

Random Gene

Explore a random gene using GIFtS (GeneCards Inferred Functionality Score). In the section below the sample gene, choose a category and a GIFtS group from the drop down menus and click the Go button. When a gene symbol appears to the right, click it to see the GeneCard for that gene.

Statistics

At the bottom of the GeneCards homepage are gene statistics. The first column contains the total number of genes and the total number of HGNC approved genes. The numbers link to graphs showing the gene distributions. The first column also has links to both the most popular GeneCards genes (hot genes) and disease genes.

The second and third columns list the number of genes in each category, with links to the statistics page, which includes both gene distribution graphs and tools to search for genes within a particular category.

The rightmost column contains links to sample genes for each category.

The bottom of each page has links to the GeneCards gene index, which lists all of the GeneCards genes.
