Summaries for NTF4 Gene

Entrez Gene Summary for NTF4 Gene

  • This gene is a member of a family of neurotrophic factors, neurotrophins, that control survival and differentiation of mammalian neurons. The expression of this gene is ubiquitous and less influenced by environmental signals. While knock-outs of other neurotrophins including nerve growth factor, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, and neurotrophin 3 prove lethal during early postnatal development, NTF5-deficient mice only show minor cellular deficits and develop normally to adulthood. GeneCards Summary for NTF4 Gene

NTF4 (Neurotrophin 4) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with NTF4 include Glaucoma 1, Open Angle, 1O and Hypochondriasis. Among its related pathways are GPCR Pathway and Phospholipase-C Pathway. GO annotations related to this gene include receptor binding and neurotrophin p75 receptor binding. An important paralog of this gene is BDNF.

  • Glaucoma 1, open angle, O (GLC1O) [MIM:613100]: A form of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG). POAG is characterized by a specific pattern of optic nerve and visual field defects. The angle of the anterior chamber of the eye is open, and usually the intraocular pressure is increased. However, glaucoma can occur at any intraocular pressure. The disease is generally asymptomatic until the late stages, by which time significant and irreversible optic nerve damage has already taken place. {ECO:0000269 PubMed:19765683, ECO:0000269 PubMed:20215012}. Note=Disease susceptibility may be associated with variations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
