There are at least four distinct but related alkaline phosphatases: intestinal, placental, placental-like, and liver/bone/kidney (tissue non-specific). The intestinal alkaline phosphatase gene encodes a digestive brush-border enzyme. This enzyme is a component of the gut mucosal defense system and is thought to function in the detoxification of lipopolysaccharide, and in the prevention of bacterial translocation in the gut. GeneCards Summary for ALPI Gene
ALPI (Alkaline Phosphatase, Intestinal) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with ALPI include Waardenburg's Syndrome and Testis Seminoma. Among its related pathways are Metabolism of proteins and Miscellaneous digestion events. Gene Ontology (GO) annotations related to this gene include magnesium ion binding and protease binding. An important paralog of this gene is ALPPL2.
