The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the STEAP (six transmembrane epithelial antigen of prostate) family, and resides in the golgi apparatus. It functions as a metalloreductase that has the ability to reduce both Fe(3+) to Fe(2+) and Cu(2+) to Cu(1+), using NAD(+) as acceptor. Studies in mice and human suggest that this gene maybe involved in adipocyte development and metabolism, and may contribute to the normal biology of the prostate cell, as well as prostate cancer progression. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq, Apr 2011]
GeneCards Summary for STEAP4 Gene
STEAP4 (STEAP4 Metalloreductase) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with STEAP4 include Psoriasis 14, Pustular and Arthritis. Among its related pathways are Copper homeostasis. GO annotations related to this gene include phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (decarboxylating) activity and ferric-chelate reductase (NADPH) activity. An important paralog of this gene is STEAP2.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for STEAP4 Gene
Metalloreductase that has the ability to reduce both Fe(3+) to Fe(2+) and Cu(2+) to Cu(1+). Uses NAD(+) as acceptor. Plays a role in systemic metabolic homeostasis, integrating inflammatory and metabolic responses (By similarity). Associated with obesity and insulin-resistance. Involved in inflammatory arthritis, through the regulation of inflammatory cytokines. Inhibits anchorage-independent cell proliferation.
