About This Section

Entrez Gene summary for STARD3 Gene:
This gene encodes a member of a subfamily of lipid trafficking proteins that are characterized by a C-terminal
steroidogenic acute regulatory domain and an N-terminal metastatic lymph node 64 domain. The encoded protein
localizes to the membranes of late endosomes and may be involved in exporting cholesterol. Alternative splicing
results in multiple transcript variants.(provided by RefSeq, Oct 2009)

GeneCards Summary for STARD3 Gene:
STARD3 (StAR-related lipid transfer (START) domain containing 3) is a protein-coding gene. Diseases associated with STARD3 include breast cancer, and prostate cancer. GO annotations related to this gene include cholesterol binding and cholesterol transporter activity. An important paralog of this gene is STARD3NL.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: STAR3_HUMAN, Q14849
Function: Binds and transports cholesterol. Promotes steroidogenesis in placenta and brain
