About This Section

Entrez Gene summary for SOD2 Gene:
This gene is a member of the iron/manganese superoxide dismutase family. It encodes a mitochondrial protein that
forms a homotetramer and binds one manganese ion per subunit. This protein binds to the superoxide byproducts of
oxidative phosphorylation and converts them to hydrogen peroxide and diatomic oxygen. Mutations in this gene have
been associated with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (IDC), premature aging, sporadic motor neuron disease, and cancer.
Alternate transcriptional splice variants, encoding different isoforms, have been characterized. (provided by
RefSeq, Jul 2008)

GeneCards Summary for SOD2 Gene:
SOD2 (superoxide dismutase 2, mitochondrial) is a protein-coding gene. Diseases associated with SOD2 include motor neuron disease, and microvascular complications of diabetes 6, and among its related super-pathways are MIF Mediated Glucocorticoid Regulation and Apoptosis and survival Anti-apoptotic action of nuclear ESR1 and ESR2. GO annotations related to this gene include oxygen binding and identical protein binding.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: SODM_HUMAN, P04179
Function: Destroys superoxide anion radicals which are normally produced within the cells and which are toxic to
biological systems
