External Ids for SOCS5 Gene
The protein encoded by this gene contains a SH2 domain and a SOCS BOX domain. The protein thus belongs to the suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) family, also known as STAT-induced STAT inhibitor (SSI) protein family. SOCS family members are known to be cytokine-inducible negative regulators of cytokine signaling. The specific function of this protein has not yet been determined. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding an identical protein have been reported. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
GeneCards Summary for SOCS5 Gene
SOCS5 (Suppressor Of Cytokine Signaling 5) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are TGF-Beta Pathway and TGF-Beta Pathway. GO annotations related to this gene include receptor tyrosine kinase binding and epidermal growth factor receptor binding. An important paralog of this gene is SOCS2.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for SOCS5 Gene
SOCS family proteins form part of a classical negative feedback system that regulates cytokine signal transduction. May be a substrate-recognition component of a SCF-like ECS (Elongin BC-CUL2/5-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase complex which mediates the ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of target proteins. Inhibits for instance EGF signaling by mediating the degradation of the EGF receptor/EGFR. Involved in the regulation of T-helper cell differentiation by inhibiting of the IL4 signaling pathway which promotes differentiation into the Th2 phenotype. Can also partially inhibit IL6 and LIF signaling.
