About This Section
| Entrez Gene summary for RNF4: The protein encoded by this gene contains a RING finger motif and acts as a transcription regulator. This protein hasbeen shown to interact with, and inhibit the activity of, TRPS1, a transcription suppressor of GATA-mediatedtranscription. Transcription repressor ZNF278/PATZ is found to interact with this protein, and thus reduce theenhancement of androgen receptor-dependent transcription mediated by this protein. Studies of the mouse and ratcounterparts suggested a role of this protein in spermatogenesis. A pseudogene of this gene is found on chromosome1.(provided by RefSeq, Jul 2010) UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: RNF4_HUMAN, P78317Function: E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase which binds polysumoylated chains covalently attached to proteins and mediates'Lys-6'-, 'Lys-11'-, 'Lys-48'- and 'Lys-63'-linked polyubiquitination of those substrates and their subsequenttargeting to the proteasome for degradation. Regulates the degradation of several proteins including PML and thetranscriptional activator PEA3. Involved in chromosome alignment and spindle assembly, it regulates the kinetochoreCENPH-CENPI-CENPK complex by targeting polysumoylated CENPI to proteasomal degradation. Regulates the cellularresponses to hypoxia and heat shock through degradation of respectively EPAS1 and PARP1. Alternatively, it may alsobind DNA/nucleosomes and have a more direct role in the regulation of transcription for instance enhancing basaltranscription and steroid receptor-mediated transcriptional activation Gene Wiki entry for RNF4
