Summaries for RIPPLY2 Gene

Entrez Gene Summary for RIPPLY2 Gene

  • This gene encodes a nuclear protein that belongs to a novel family of proteins required for vertebrate somitogenesis. Members of this family have a tetrapeptide WRPW motif that is required for interaction with the transcriptional repressor Groucho and a carboxy-terminal Ripply homology domain/Bowline-DSCR-Ledgerline conserved region required for transcriptional repression. Null mutant mice die soon after birth and display defects in axial skeleton segmentation due to defective somitogenesis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Feb 2016]

GeneCards Summary for RIPPLY2 Gene

RIPPLY2 (Ripply Transcriptional Repressor 2) is a Protein Coding gene, and is affiliated with the lncRNA class. Diseases associated with RIPPLY2 include Spondylocostal Dysostosis 6 and Spondylocostal Dysostosis, Autosomal Recessive. An important paralog of this gene is RIPPLY1.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for RIPPLY2 Gene

  • Plays a role in somitogenesis. Required for somite segregation and establishment of rostrocaudal polarity in somites (By similarity).

  • Spondylocostal dysostosis 6, autosomal recessive (SCDO6) [MIM:616566]: A form of spondylocostal dysostosis, a condition of variable severity associated with vertebral and rib segmentation defects. The main skeletal malformations include fusion of vertebrae, hemivertebrae, fusion of certain ribs, and other rib malformations. Deformity of the chest and spine (severe scoliosis, kyphoscoliosis and lordosis) is a natural consequence of the malformation and leads to a dwarf-like appearance. As the thorax is small, infants frequently have respiratory insufficiency and repeated respiratory infections resulting in life-threatening complications in the first year of life. {ECO:0000269 PubMed:25343988}. Note=The disease is caused by mutations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
