Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are regulatory and structural components of G protein-coupled receptor complexes. RGS proteins are GTPase-activating proteins for Gi (see GNAI1; MIM 139310) and Gq (see GNAQ; MIM 600998) class G-alpha proteins. They accelerate transit through the cycle of GTP binding and hydrolysis and thereby accelerate signaling kinetics and termination.[supplied by OMIM, Nov 2008]
GeneCards Summary for RGS21 Gene
RGS21 (Regulator Of G-Protein Signaling 21) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are Signaling by GPCR and Activation of cAMP-Dependent PKA. GO annotations related to this gene include GTPase activator activity. An important paralog of this gene is RGS18.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for RGS21 Gene
Inhibits signal transduction by increasing the GTPase activity of G protein alpha subunits thereby driving them into their inactive GDP-bound form.
