Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins are regulatory and structural components of G protein-coupled receptor complexes. RGS proteins are GTPase-activating proteins for Gi (see GNAI1; MIM 139310) and Gq (see GNAQ; MIM 600998) class G-alpha proteins. They accelerate transit through the cycle of GTP binding and hydrolysis and thereby accelerate signaling kinetics and termination.[supplied by OMIM, Nov 2008]
GeneCards Summary for RGS21 Gene
RGS21 (Regulator Of G-Protein Signaling 21) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are Signaling by GPCR and Interleukin receptor SHC signaling. GO annotations related to this gene include GTPase activator activity. An important paralog of this gene is RGS18.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for RGS21 Gene
Inhibits signal transduction by increasing the GTPase activity of G protein alpha subunits thereby driving them into their inactive GDP-bound form.
