The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) family. PPases catalyze the hydrolysis of pyrophosphate to inorganic phosphate, which is important for the phosphate metabolism of cells. Studies of a similar protein in bovine suggested a cytoplasmic localization of this enzyme. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
GeneCards Summary for PPA1 Gene
PPA1 (Pyrophosphatase (Inorganic) 1) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with PPA1 include baylisascariasis. Among its related pathways are Respiratory electron transport, ATP synthesis by chemiosmotic coupling, and heat production by uncoupling proteins. and tRNA Aminoacylation. GO annotations related to this gene include magnesium ion binding and inorganic diphosphatase activity. An important paralog of this gene is PPA2.
