EntrezGene summary for PDGFB : The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the platelet-derived growth factor family. The fourmembers of this family are mitogenic factors for cells of mesenchymal origin and are characterizedby a motif of eight cysteines. This gene product can exist either as a homodimer (PDGF-BB) or as aheterodimer with the platelet-derived growth factor alpha polypeptide (PDGF-AB), where the dimersare connected by disulfide bonds. Mutations in this gene are associated with meningioma.Reciprocal translocations between chromosomes 22 and 7, at sites where this gene and that forCOL1A1 are located, are associated with a particular type of skin tumor called dermatofibrosarcomaprotuberans resulting from unregulated expression of growth factor. Two alternatively splicedtranscript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene. [provided byRefSeq] UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: PDGFB_HUMAN, P01127 Function : Platelet-derived growth factor is a potent mitogen for cells of mesenchymal origin.Binding of this growth factor to its affinity receptor elicits a variety of cellular responses. Itis released by platelets upon wounding and plays an important role in stimulating adjacent cellsto grow and thereby heals the wound

OMIM: 190040 UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: PDGFB_HUMAN, P01127
A chromosomal aberration involving PDGFB is a cause of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans(DFSP) [MIM:607907]. Translocation t(17;22)(q22;q13) with COLA1. DFSP is an uncommon, locallyaggressive, but rarely metastasizing tumor of the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Ittypically occurs during early or middle adult life and is most frequently located on the trunk andproximal extremities
