This human gene represents a non-protein coding RNA due to the presence of an upstream open reading frame (uORF). TheuORF is predicted to interfere with translation of the longest ORF, and translation of the uORF renders the transcripta candidate for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD). The uORF is conserved in primates and some other mammals, but notin mouse and rat. Therefore, the mouse (GeneID:415115) or rat (GeneID: 311633) gene encodes a functional protein.(provided by RefSeq, Jan 2013)

Probablesubstrate-recognition component of a SCF-like ECS (Elongin BC-CUL2/5-SOCS-box protein) E3 ubiquitin-protein ligasecomplex, which mediates the ubiquitination of proteins.
