Summaries for MIR4657 Gene

Entrez Gene Summary for MIR4657 Gene

  • microRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20-24 nt) non-coding RNAs that are involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both the stability and translation of mRNAs. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as part of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs) that can be either protein-coding or non-coding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the Drosha ribonuclease III enzyme to produce an approximately 70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further cleaved by the cytoplasmic Dicer ribonuclease to generate the mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into a RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly results in translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. The RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]

GeneCards Summary for MIR4657 Gene

MIR4657 (MicroRNA 4657) is an RNA Gene, and is affiliated with the miRNA class. Diseases associated with MIR4657 include Myelodysplastic Syndrome. An important paralog of this gene is PURA.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for MIR4657 Gene

  • Has capacity to bind repeated elements in single-stranded DNA such as the purine-rich single strand of the PUR element located upstream of the MYC gene. Plays a role in the control of vascular smooth muscle (VSM) alpha-actin gene transcription as repressor in myoblasts and fibroblasts. Participates in transcriptional and translational regulation of alpha-MHC expression in cardiac myocytes by binding to the purine-rich negative regulatory (PNR) element. Modulates constitutive liver galectin-3 gene transcription by binding to its promoter. May play a role in the dendritic transport of a subset of mRNAs (By similarity).

    Miscellaneous:
    • Defects in PURB may be a cause of progression of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) towards acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). MDS refers to a heterogeneous group of closely related hematopoietic disorders. All are characterized by a cellular marrow with impaired morphology and maturation (dysmyelopoiesis) and peripheral blood cytopenias, resulting from ineffective blood cell production. Some patients with MDS develop acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a malignant disease in which hematopoietic precursors are arrested in an early stage of development.
