About This Section
| Entrez Gene summary for MINK1: This gene encodes a serine/threonine kinase belonging to the germinal center kinase (GCK) family. The protein isstructurally similar to the kinases that are related to NIK and may belong to a distinct subfamily of NIK-relatedkinases within the GCK family. Studies of the mouse homolog indicate an up-regulation of expression in the course ofpostnatal mouse cerebral development and activation of the cJun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and the p38 pathways.Alternative splicing occurs at this locus and four transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have beenidentified. (provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008) UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: MINK1_HUMAN, Q8N4C8Function: Serine/threonine kinase which acts as a negative regulator of Ras-related Rap2-mediated signal transductionto control neuronal structure and AMPA receptor trafficking. Required for normal synaptic density, dendritecomplexity, as well as surface AMPA receptor expression in hippocampal neurons. Can activate the JNK and MAPK14/p38pathways and mediates stimulation of the stress-activated protein kinase MAPK14/p38 MAPK downstream of the Raf/ERKpathway. Phosphorylates: TANC1 upon stimulation by RAP2A, MBP and SMAD1. Has an essential function in negativeselection of thymocytes, perhaps by coupling NCK1 to activation of JNK1Function: Isoform 4 can activate the JNK pathway. Involved in the regulation of actin cytoskeleton reorganization,cell-matrix adhesion, cell-cell adhesion and cell migration Gene Wiki entry for MINK1
