About This Section

Entrez Gene summary for MCM5:
The protein encoded by this gene is structurally very similar to the CDC46 protein from S. cerevisiae, a protein
involved in the initiation of DNA replication. The encoded protein is a member of the MCM family of chromatin-binding
proteins and can interact with at least two other members of this family. The encoded protein is upregulated in the
transition from the G0 to G1/S phase of the cell cycle and may actively participate in cell cycle regulation.
(provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008)

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: MCM5_HUMAN, P33992
Function: Acts as component of the MCM2-7 complex (MCM complex) which is the putative replicative helicase essential
for 'once per cell cycle' DNA replication initiation and elongation in eukaryotic cells. The active ATPase sites in
the MCM2-7 ring are formed through the interaction surfaces of two neighboring subunits such that a critical structure
of a conserved arginine finger motif is provided in trans relative to the ATP-binding site of the Walker A box of the
adjacent subunit. The six ATPase active sites, however, are likely to contribute differentially to the complex
helicase activity (By similarity). Interacts with MCMBP

About This Section

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: MCM5_HUMAN, P33992 (See protein sequence)
Recommended Name: DNA replication licensing factor MCM5
Size: 734 amino acids; 82286 Da
Subunit: Component of the MCM2-7 complex. The complex forms a toroidal hexameric ring with the proposed subunit order
MCM2-MCM6-MCM4-MCM7-MCM3-MCM5 (By simililarity)
Subcellular location: Nucleus
Miscellaneous: Early fractionation of eukaryotic MCM proteins yielded a variety of dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric
complexes with unclear biological significance. The MCM2-7 hexamer is the proposed physiological active complex
