About This Section

Entrez Gene summary for HPN Gene:
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane serine protease that may be involved in diverse cellular functions,
including blood coagulation and the maintenance of cell morphology. Expression of the encoded protein is
associated with the growth and progression of cancers, particularly prostate cancer. The protein is cleaved into
a catalytic serine protease chain and a non-catalytic scavenger receptor cysteine-rich chain, which associate via
a single disulfide bond. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. (provided by RefSeq, Jan
2013)

GeneCards Summary for HPN Gene:
HPN (hepsin) is a protein-coding gene. Diseases associated with HPN include prostate cancer, progression and metastasis of, and prostate cancer, progression of. GO annotations related to this gene include serine-type peptidase activity and serine-type endopeptidase activity. An important paralog of this gene is TMPRSS11D.

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: HEPS_HUMAN, P05981
Function: Plays an essential role in cell growth and maintenance of cell morphology. May mediate the activating
cleavage of HGF and MST1/HGFL
