This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the GNS1/SUR4 family. Members of this family play a role in elongation of long chain fatty acids to provide precursors for synthesis of sphingolipids and ceramides. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2013]
GeneCards Summary for ELOVL3 Gene
ELOVL3 (ELOVL Fatty Acid Elongase 3) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are Fatty acid elongation and Metabolism. GO annotations related to this gene include transferase activity. An important paralog of this gene is ELOVL6.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for ELOVL3 Gene
Catalyzes the first and rate-limiting reaction of the four that constitute the long-chain fatty acids elongation cycle. This endoplasmic reticulum-bound enzymatic process, allows the addition of 2 carbons to the chain of long- and very long-chain fatty acids/VLCFAs per cycle. Condensing enzyme with higher activity toward C18 acyl-CoAs, especially C18:0 acyl-CoAs. May participate in the production of saturated and monounsaturated VLCFAs of different chain lengths that are involved in multiple biological processes as precursors of membrane lipids and lipid mediators.
