About This Section
| EntrezGene summary for DAOA: This gene encodes a protein that is an activator of the FAD-dependent enzyme D-amino acid oxidase, which degrades the gliotransmitter D-serine, a potent activator of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) type glutamate receptors. Polymorphisms in this gene have been implicated in susceptibility to schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder, possibly due to decreased levels of D-serine and decreased NMDA receptor functioning. Alternatively spliced transcript variants of this gene have been described, but their biological validity has not been determined. [provided by RefSeq] UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: DAOA_HUMAN, P59103Function: Seems to activate D-amino acid oxidase |
