About This Section

EntrezGene summary for CDC2:
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the Ser/Thr protein kinase family. This protein is
a catalytic subunit of the highly conserved protein kinase complex known as M-phase promoting
factor (MPF), which is essential for G1/S and G2/M phase transitions of eukaryotic cell cycle.
Mitotic cyclins stably associate with this protein and function as regulatory subunits. The kinase
activity of this protein is controlled by cyclin accumulation and destruction through the cell
cycle. The phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of this protein also play important regulatory
roles in cell cycle control. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms
have been found for this gene. [provided by RefSeq]

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: CDC2_HUMAN, P06493
Function: Plays a key role in the control of the eukaryotic cell cycle. It is required in higher
cells for entry into S-phase and mitosis. p34 is a component of the kinase complex that
phosphorylates the repetitive C-terminus of RNA polymerase II

About This Section

UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: CDC2_HUMAN, P06493 (See protein sequence)
Recommended Name: Cell division control protein 2 homolog
Size: 297 amino acids; 34095 Da
Subunit: Forms a stable but non-covalent complex with a regulatory subunit and with a cyclin.
Interacts with DLGAP5. Isoform 2 is unable to complex with cyclin B1 and also fails to bind to the
CDK inhibitor p21. Interacts with catalytically active CCNB1 and RALBP1 during mitosis to form an
endocytotic complex during interphase
