This gene encodes a member of the transforming growth factor beta superfamily of regulatory proteins. The encoded preproprotein undergoes proteolytic processing to generate the mature protein. Studies in laboratory mice suggest that this protein may play a role in development of the reproductive system. This gene may have arose from a gene duplication event and its gene duplicate is also present on chromosome 1. [provided by RefSeq, Nov 2015]
GeneCards Summary for BMP8A Gene
BMP8A (Bone Morphogenetic Protein 8a) is a Protein Coding gene. Among its related pathways are Hippo signaling pathway and TGF-beta signaling pathway (KEGG). GO annotations related to this gene include cytokine activity and transforming growth factor beta receptor binding. An important paralog of this gene is BMP2.
UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot for BMP8A Gene
Induces cartilage and bone formation. May be the osteoinductive factor responsible for the phenomenon of epithelial osteogenesis. Plays a role in calcium regulation and bone homeostasis (By similarity). Signaling protein involved in regulation of thermogenesis and energy balance. Proposed to increase the peripheral response of brown adipose tissue (BAT) to adrenergic stimulation while acting centrally in the hypothalamus to increase sympathetic output to BAT.
