This gene is overexpressed in several cancer cell lines, suggesting an involvement in oncogenic signal transduction. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Like AURKB, AURKC phosphorylates histone H3 at Ser-10 and Ser-28. Phosphorylates TACC1, another protein involved in cell division, at Ser-228.

Okadaic acid, an inhibitor of protein phosphatase 1 (PP1), protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) and protein phosphatase 5 (PP5), increases AURKC activity. AURKC is also stabilized through its interaction with INCENP, which acts also as an activator.
