Summaries for ADAM33 Gene

Entrez Gene Summary for ADAM33 Gene

  • This gene encodes a member of the ADAM (a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain) family. Members of this family are membrane-anchored proteins structurally related to snake venom disintegrins, and have been implicated in a variety of biological processes involving cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions, including fertilization, muscle development, and neurogenesis. This protein is a type I transmembrane protein implicated in asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Sep 2013]

GeneCards Summary for ADAM33 Gene

ADAM33 (ADAM Metallopeptidase Domain 33) is a Protein Coding gene. Diseases associated with ADAM33 include Asthma and Allergic Asthma. GO annotations related to this gene include metalloendopeptidase activity. An important paralog of this gene is ADAM7.

  • Asthma (ASTHMA) [MIM:600807]: The most common chronic disease affecting children and young adults. It is a complex genetic disorder with a heterogeneous phenotype, largely attributed to the interactions among many genes and between these genes and the environment. It is characterized by recurrent attacks of paroxysmal dyspnea, with wheezing due to spasmodic contraction of the bronchi. {ECO:0000269 PubMed:12110844, ECO:0000269 PubMed:16773130, ECO:0000269 PubMed:19237393}. Note=Disease susceptibility is associated with variations affecting the gene represented in this entry.
