EntrezGene summary for PTGS1 : Prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase (PTGS), also known as cyclooxygenase, is the key enzyme inprostaglandin biosynthesis, and acts both as a dioxygenase and as a peroxidase. There are twoisozymes of PTGS: a constitutive PTGS1 and an inducible PTGS2, which differ in their regulation ofexpression and tissue distribution. This gene encodes PTGS1, which regulates angiogenesis inendothelial cells, and is inhibited by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin. PTGS1is thought to be involved in cell-cell signaling and maintaining tissue homeostasis. Alternativesplicing of this gene generates two transcript variants. The expression of these two transcriptsis differentially regulated by relevant cytokines and growth factors. [provided by RefSeq] UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot: PGH1_HUMAN, P23219 Function : May play an important role in regulating or promoting cell proliferation in some normaland neoplastically transformed cells
